They all had held a great distaste against a village girl,
But all she did was try to find the meaning to her life.
Every day gave her pain and unending strife.
All she wanted was a reason as to why.

It’s because of the ugly wings so dark and black that grew upon her back,
And eyes of blood that were redder than what a normal human had.
All of the village would speak and whisper to themselves, “Have you heard?
You must stay away from the Mononoke Girl.”

So it was she
Lived her days, everyday hoping that a day would come where
Someone would eventually need the help from a person like her.
Still she hoped, still she hoped, every day she waited for that chance to come.

As she looked up above at the stars in the midnight sky and then let herself start to cry,
She realized that the warmth she had been trying to find was just too far away.
All the cold stones that the whole town had thrown upon her ripped up spirit into bits
And yet she still kept holding on. One day she’d belong.

She was the Mononoke Child,
She lived her life being hated and reviled. Many years passed on by, until one day…

One fateful day, a disaster occurred: the crater caught in flames.
As ash and soot sowed panic in all, the people went insane.
They didn’t know what to do, so they all decided to bring a gift to the gods.
They then yelled “Let us give the Demon Child.”

She then said,
“If this is what I must do to prevent the doom that will occur…”
With a nod, she agreed, offering herself to them all.
“I see. Finally, I guess my life has not been that useless after all.”

And so that night, all the stars were replaced with a fog of gray.
The echoing hatchet was struck so constantly that it was a sign that led to the end of the village girl’s story.
Everyone watched as she sank to the deep depths of the lake. They then saw that even in the midst of her final tragic end, she smiled for their sake.

After the bubbles had stopped, someone in the crowd had
Quietly said to themselves, they wondered aloud, “What in the world did that girl ever do to deserve this cruel fate?”
Suddenly, everyone stopped and looked at themselves.
She never did any wrong, they had realized that while in their hate, they made a huge mistake…

One fateful day, a disaster occurred: a crater caught in flames.
Ash and soot fell down upon all as people fled in vain.
Everything was dead and still the very next day.
The only sound that could be heard was the sand that blew away.

Right at the bottom of the lake sleeps the Mononoke Girl who still kept on smiling for their sake.
